An RAS Specialist Discussion Meeting

The Kinematics of Star Formation:

Theory and Observation in the Gaia Era

Friday 9th January 2015, London

Aims of the meeting

With the advent or recent large-scale radial velocity surveys and the recent launch of ESA's astrometric Gaia satellite, studies of the kinematics of young stars have become increasingly prominent over the last few years. They are the key to our understanding of both the star formation process and the formation and early evolution of star clusters, allowing us to test the results of hydrodynamic simulations of the star formation process and N-body models of the dynamical evolution of star clusters. This specialist discussion meeting will focus on recent observations and models of the kinematics of young stars and star clusters, and will also discuss the upcoming wealth of kinematic data expected from the Gaia mission and how the community can best prepare for it.

Invited Speakers

- Paul Clark (Cardiff University)
- Simon Goodwin (Sheffield University)
- Estelle Moraux (Observatoire de Grenoble)

Venue

The meeting will be held in the Lecture Theatre of the Geological Society, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London, UK. A map can be found here.

Registration

If you would like to attend this meeting please send an email to nick.nwright@gmail.com including your full name, title, email address and affiliation. Please also note if you are a student. There is no fixed deadline for registering your attendance at this meeting, but it is useful for us to know numbers in advance and you will be added to the mailing list for meeting information.

Admission is free to members of the Royal Astronomical Society and is £15 for non-members (£5 for students), payable on the door. Individuals who are not members of the RAS but wish to join may complete and hand in an application form while at the meeting and will have their admission fee waived or refunded (note that students can join the RAS for only £1).

Some supporting funds are available to cover the travel costs of research students (or recently completed research students) who are Fellows of the RAS and do not have access to funds from their home institution. If you are in need of travel support please note this, and the specific circumstances, in your registration email.

The deadline for contributed talks has passed, but if you would like to present a poster at the meeting please send an email to nick.nwright@gmail.com with the title of your poster and we will arrange for poster boards to be available. The deadline for submission of poster contributions is: Friday 19th December 2014.
